CPEA has published two new Safeguarding Adults Reviews concerning the deaths of two people with learning disabilities in Suffolk. The reviews were into the deaths of James, a 33 year old man with a learning disability who had lifelong problems with constipation and Amy, a 52 year old woman with learning disabilities with known bowel problems. James died in hospital on 17 November 2012 and Amy died in hospital on 7 May 2013. The CPEA Reports, written by highly-experienced Associate Margeret Flynn, provide 15 recommendations to be taken forward which include the need for care coordination to be supported by record keeping and information sharing across professionals and services and that peoples families or representatives are regularly consulted. CPEA’s Margaret Flynn has published ‘In Search of Accountability’: A review of the neglect of older people living in care homes investigated as Operation Jasmine. The review discusses the background and terms of reference of the Review, an insight into the people and organisations involved, an overview of the findings and analysis plus the recommendations. It concludes with six ‘lessons for the future’ of older people’s residential care as requested by the First Minister. The report can be downloaded here

The Serious Case Review concerns the death in 2013 of an elderly man living at a Jersey Care Home, and where there was serious cause for concern about the way in which agencies have worked together to safeguard this individual. The report can be downloaded here
So, I have been doing some Better Care Fund (BCF) work for a local authority and I’d like to share some of my thoughts around this somewhat controversial topic. Controversial because BCF can either be seen as a cynical move to make it look like local authorities and the NHS have been given a load more money to spend on integrating services or as an opportunity to start to generate responsibility across the health and social care system for certain big ticket outcomes…

Adult – from the Latin adultus, “grown up, mature, adult, ripe”. Above is the etymology of the word ‘adult’ that I found using an online etymology dictionary. And if it were not for the words ‘grown up, mature, and ripe,’ this blog may have taken the form of the old ‘which came first – chicken or egg/adultus or adult?’ paradox… However, fortunately the test for recognising a fully grown up, mature human is apparently the same as selecting a good grapefruit or banana!…
